Seattle, May 1988 Why would up and coming musician Craig Adler OD on heroin just days before signing a major record deal? Craig's band was the first of the new Seattle music scene to break out of the Northwest and they were about to hit the big time. With everything to live for, Craig had been clean for months; everybody swore it.
Music journalist Laura Benton is determined to find the answer. But as she digs into the story, the pieces don’t quite add up – and then the threats begin. Just a phone call at first, then a bullet in the mail ... and as the threats escalate, her dreams turn to nightmares in the Emerald City and Laura finds herself desperately fighting for her reputation - and her life.

West Seattle was the muddied step-child of the Emerald City. Headlines announced that Craig Adler of Snakeblood was dead of an overdose.Onlookers summed up Steve and Laura as being mismatched. That was mistaken snap judgements. They fit perfectly together, opposites attracting overtime.
Craig Adler had been a mix of all things Seattle. He feared failure, was filled with contradictions, had country style values, and to everyone's knowledge, was not a drug abuser. He had just nailed a serious, lucrative, record contract.
Laura, a music journalist, can't match together the jig-saw pieces. Threats began to create stumbling blocks, fear and nightmares. Salacious rumours threatened her reputation and malicious evil threatens her life. Laura Benton loves Seattle, the history, it's Pioneer Square, it's independence, the waterfront, Puget Sound, and the exciting music scene.Someone has injected poison into her idyllic life. That injection stings more than an encounter with a jelly fish, or the barb from marauding stingray. She was tenacious. Laura wouldn't give up until the answers came hard and true.
Having lived in Seattle from 1997 until 2003, I enjoyed revisiting the sights, sounds, scenes and neighbourhoods. Good job. Thanks, Chris Nickson.

Emerald City Laura Benton mystery edition by Chris Nickson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
What a great read. I lived and played music in Seattle "back in the day". The references in Emerald City are spot on, from mention of the hotel/motel style apartment buildings to clubs like Astor Park and The Central Tavern. "Will the last person leaving Seattle turn out the lights" is a reference to 70s era Seattle that is great for those of us who grew up here during that time. But, the best part of Emerald City is the story and main character Laura Benton. The story kept me engaged and was a super fun read. Laura Benton is a pure Seattle woman--tough and strong. Read this book now!!
For a relatively short listen, this story packs it all in; music, murder, nostalgia and mystery. Not to mention the wonderful descriptions of Seattle, the clubs, buildings and nightlife of those times.
Laura has fought long and hard for her career in music, she doesn't play or sing but as a music writer, her job allows her to live in the world she loves. Moving within this world of creativity Laura is fully aware of the pitfalls and snares awaiting the young musicians who, following the mind altering buzz of performing, are at risk of succumbing to the equally mind altering effects of illegal drugs. She determines to use her skills as a reporter and her insider knowledge to find out what really happened. Laura finds herself at great risk, but what I did like is that the author didn't create one of those female sleuths who, against all advice and common sense, still put themselves in to ridiculously stupid and self endangering situations. Laura thinks about things, weighs up the odds and then acts.
I would have thought though, that finding him with his vein still tied off would have alerted the medics to suspicious circumstances. However, I really enjoyed the story, I hope we hear a lot more about Laura.
Narrator
Beautifully narrated by Lorelei King, which added to my listening enjoyment, it's no surprise that she is one of the most popular narrators of the audiobook world. Unlike some actors who narrate, she doesn't do that awful overacting thing. I must admit though, I had to look at an online book to verify Craig's name as actually being Craig, not Creg. However, seems all Americans say it funny, there's even a YouTube video about this strange habit!
I purchased this audiobook from Audible
Chris writes differently. I loved his novels about Leeds. So I tried a different genre. In a different way he gives a sense of familiarity and belief in the characters and the surroundings.
Liked the novel as a 'first' Seattle novel - looking forward to reading the second in the series
Can't wait to read more from this author.
This book is a thrill, Chris Nickson knows the music scene inside out, the characters, the darkness, the illusions, the lies, this is a vivid tale of what hides behind the glamor and the glory. He writes with humanity and compassion, such a talented, natural writer, I could feel Seattle's vibration in every chapter, the mist, the ocean air, the busy life of an emerging city...I couldn't put it down, I would call this book a page turner. It also amazed me how he was able to write from the point of view of a woman with such clarity and truthfulness. I hope there's a Laura Benton mystery volume 2 coming up, I'll be the first to buy it!
At first, I didn't like this book. Then, the writing and characters kept drawing me deeper into the story. The pages just flew by quickly, as I tried to figure out the mystery. And didn't until it was revealed.
But the street by street listing as the main character went from place to place felt like filler to me; otherwise, I would have given it four stars.
